General Information
The Department of Physics of the University of Crete organizes each year an 18-month intensive Master's Degree Program in 'Photonics & Nanoelectronics'.
The curriculum is a combination of advanced general physics courses, and a number of elective courses from a wide spectrum of modern physics reflecting the interests and activities in the Department. The curriculum includes an original research thesis project, which is an integral part of the program.
The experimental or theoretical Master's thesis project is carried out under the supervision of a faculty member or researcher of the Department, in a modern cutting-edge research area. The general scientific areas covered by the program are Photonics and Nanoelectronics.
The state-of-the-art facilities of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) are available for the implementation of the research project.
Graduate Program
The graduate program in 'Photonics & Nanoelectronics' has a nominal duration of 3 semesters (18 months).
To obtain their Master's degree, students must complete 90 ECTS; 60 from courses and 30 from a research project.
- During the 1st academic semester (4 calendar months) students are expected to attend two (2) compulsory courses (12 ECTS), the special compulsory courses "Laboratory Teaching" (3 ECTS), and three (3) elective courses (15 ECTS). Total semester credits: 30 ECTS.
- In the 2nd semester (4 calendar months), the students are expected to attend two (1) compulsory course (6 ECTS), two (2) special compulsory coursees (16 and 3 ECTS each), and one (1) elective course (5 ECTS). Total semester credits: 30 ECTS.
- The courses are complemented by a 4-month research project (30 ECTS) in the 3rd semester. However, typically students start the project earlier, during the 1st or 2nd semesters.
- The students participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department.
Students who are unable to complete their studies within the above mentioned 18-month period, may request an extension at least 2 months before the end of the program. This extension can be granted for at most 12 additional months and only in exceptional cases following a decision by the Graduate Program Committee.
